What You Need to Know About Breast Reconstruction

Battling cancer is traumatic and having to undergo a mastectomy is a painful and emotional experience. Living with a visual reminder of the trauma can add to a survivor’s pain. Breast Reconstruction Associates has experienced Austin breast surgeons and breast surgeons in the Fort Worth area who understand how much a reconstruction surgery can boost a patient’s confidence and help them return to a level of normalcy after a mastectomy. Here is what you need to know if you are considering breast reconstruction surgery.

Preparing for Surgery

If you are a smoker, you will need to quit smoking before surgery. Smoking decreases blood flow, preventing the body from adequately healing itself.

Before the surgery, your breast surgeon may advise you to abstain from certain medications and supplements which can interfere with the procedure and prevent tissues from healing.

Anesthesia

Reconstruction surgery will happen in stages. The first stage requires general anesthesia. General anesthesia is a treatment that uses certain medicines that puts you into a deep sleep so you do not feel pain during surgery.

During the latter stages, a local anesthetic will be administered. You will be awake during these follow-up procedures, but the area the doctor will be working on will be numbed. A sedative to quell anxiety can be prescribed before any of these latter stages in the reconstruction surgery takes place.

After the Reconstruction Surgery

Any type of surgery has risks, and breast reconstruction may pose certain unique problems for some women. Even though many of these are common, it’s important to have an idea of the possible risks and side effects. Some women may experience swelling and scarring, but the swelling will go down in time and the scarring will fade.

Because reconstruction surgery is a process, you will need to go back for several minor procedures until the surgery is complete. Areola and nipple rebuilding is part of the latter stages of the surgery.

Payment

Breast reconstruction surgery is usually covered by insurance. It will go through the usual pre-authorization process with your insurer. Please be aware of any deductibles or copays that must be met before the surgery takes place.

Breast reconstruction surgery is a safe procedure proven to boost the quality of life of women recovering from breast cancer and mastectomies. Breast Reconstruction Associates is staffed with caring, dedicated breast surgeons in Fort Worth and breast surgeons in Austin who will take the time to answer all of your questions about reconstruction surgery.
